Enviormental Cost of Artificial Intelligence (AI)

With the rise in AI, Artificial systems have taken over the world, from voice assistants to self-driving cars, Artificial Intelligence has impacted the way of life, it has impacted various industries offering optimization, development and productivity. AI is the biggest influence on the global economy and trade.

Role of AI in enviormental sustainability

AI plays a very crucial role in environmental sustainability–from ending hunger and poverty to achieving sustainable energy and preservation of the Ecosystem. However, in recent years Environmental issues have become a major topic of discussion worldwide, sparking debates, public outrage, and protests. As the need for sustainable solutions continues to grow, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as a promising technology with the potential to address various environmental challenges. From protecting wildlife and conserving natural resources to improving agricultural practices and developing clean energy solutions, AI is increasingly being integrated into environmental initiatives.

AI is being used to monitor pollution, manage waste, and improve energy efficiency. These applications demonstrate how technology can contribute to a more sustainable future. However, while AI offers several opportunities for environmental protection, its own environmental impact raises important questions about whether this technology is as sustainable as it appears. It is extremely important to highlight the importance of responsible AI development, effective regulation, and transparent oversight. Without appropriate safeguards, the rapid expansion of AI may create environmental and ethical problems that may be irreversible.

AI's Effect on the Enviorment

In the United Nations article about climate change it mentions, “Across Papua New Guinea, water sources are drying up, crops are failing and food prices are rising months before the worst agricultural impacts are expected." Unfortunately, our planet is facing dire consequences of global warming and climate change for which immediate action is required. Although artificial intelligence has provided us with ample advantages it still has a significant negative impact on the environment because its development and operation require enormous computing resources.

AI systems depend on data centers containing thousands of powerful servers that consume large amounts of electricity and fresh drinking water. In the recent study published by the journal 'Patterns' by the infamous Alex de Vries-Gao AI systems are estimated to have consumed 765 billions liters of water just in 2025 alone, this given amount is greater than the total global consumption of bottled water in 2025. With the rise of AI systems and data centers, concerns related to its water consumption are expected to intensify.

Recent research indicates that this indirect water use, such as for power generation, can be up to four times higher than the direct water consumption for server cooling alone. “By 2030, AI's water use will match the needs of 1.3 billion people while its power use triples that of 650 million,” UN University investigation warns. When this electricity is generated from fossil fuels, it contributes to greenhouse gas emissions and global warming.

It is estimated that in a few years time large AI systems are expected to consume as much energy as an entire country. The International Energy Agency (IEA) published a report on April 2025 proposing that global data centres' electricity consumption would reach approximately 945 terawatt-hours (TWh) annually by 2030, The production of AI hardware also requires minerals and raw materials, contributing to mining, resource depletion, and electronic waste. As AI continues to expand worldwide, its growing demand for energy, water, and computing infrastructure raises concerns about its long-term environmental sustainability.

Conclusion

Ultimately, it is extremely necessary to ensure artificial intelligence must remain a tool that serves humanity, not a force that comes at the expense of our planet. The goal should not be to advance AI at any cost, but to ensure that its advancement benefits both humanity and the Earth. After all, true progress is not measured by how intelligent our technology becomes, but by how wisely we choose to use it.
